“Being in the same school over the last 3 years has allowed me to build strong and trusting relationships with the students I support. Through these relationships, I have seen how students support each other, chat about how great their speech and language sessions are and also seek us out to share their concerns and worries.

It also gives students the confidence to give us feedback and really direct and lead the sessions to target the things that are important and relevant to them. This hasn’t just been in SALT but also using skills we have practiced advocating for the things they need more of from their teachers or staff in school – skills that will be great for their future as independent adults.

We’ve also been able to initiate joint speech therapy and specialist teaching lessons to support students in their everyday lessons and staff have sought us out to ask for further support to make their lessons more inclusive. We are looking to set up a joint SALT and drama group next year.”
