Funding
In the UK, schools can access funding for buying in specialist support from several sources, depending on the type of school, the needs of their pupils, and local arrangements.
1. School Budgets (delegated funding)
Most mainstream and special schools receive a delegated budget from their local authority or funding body, which they manage independently. This includes:
- Notional SEN funding (part of the school’s core budget): Used to meet the needs of pupils with SEN, including commissioning support such as speech and language therapy. Schools are expected to fund up to the first £6,000 of additional provision per pupil with SEN.
- Additional top-up funding (for pupils with EHCPs): If a child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) that specifies Speech and Language Therapy and / or Occupational Therapy, the local authority may provide top-up funding to the school, which can be used to commission services.
- Targeted or time-limited projects (e.g. speech and language hubs): In these cases, the school might not need to buy in services themselves, or they might supplement what’s provided.
2. Pupil Premium Funding
- Schools may use Pupil Premium to support speech and language development if communication needs or physical / sensory needs are a barrier to learning for disadvantaged pupils.
3. Shared Provision within your School Cluster or School Community / Academy schools
4. Charities, Grants, and Other Funding
Some schools apply for external funding from:
- Educational charities (e.g. The Communication Trust, Shine Trust)
- Local or national grants
- Fundraising activities (especially in special schools)
