Jen joined The Owl Centre as a Highly Specialist Autism Practitioner in July 2023, after several years working as an Associate on both the autism and ADHD teams. With 20 years of experience as a Speech and Language Therapist across the NHS and private practice, Jen brings a wealth of knowledge to her role. Her passion lies in building strong, trusting relationships with families and in continually developing her own practice through CPD.
6.10am – A Gentle Start
My day begins early with a cup of tea and some Pilates in the lounge, a calm moment before everything gets going. I then have breakfast with my family. My husband takes our son to school and I get ready to begin work.
7.30am – Preparing for the Day
I log on at 7.30 and check my diary, emails and appointments. Most days I will complete a developmental history in the morning and an autism observation in the afternoon. I always spend a little time reading through background information, so I am fully prepared to meet each child and family.
9.00-11.30am – Listening and Learning
The developmental history is one of my favourite parts of the role. Parents share their stories, and I gather important details about their child’s early development. These conversations give me a real sense of each child’s journey and help to guide future decision-making. Once the session is complete, I write up my notes before lunch.
12.00-12.30pm – Time to Refuel
With an early start comes an early lunch. I like to step away from my computer, enjoy some fresh air if the weather allows, and reset before the afternoon begins.
12.30-2.00pm – Observation in Action
The afternoon is spent carrying out an autism observation session. Watching a child interact and respond is always fascinating. After the session, I record my observations and begin shaping my thoughts, ready to bring into a future multi-disciplinary team discussion.
3.00pm – Team Connection
Our weekly Autism Team Meeting is a real highlight. It gives us a chance to share updates, reflect on cases, and connect as a team. I always come away with new ideas and a sense of motivation.
3.30pm – The Best of Both Worlds
My working day finishes at 3.30, which means I can collect my son from school and take him to Cubs. Living in rural North Wales, the ability to work from home is ideal for me. I love that I can do meaningful and rewarding work without long commutes, while still having plenty of time for family life.
Why I Love Working at The Owl Centre
The Owl Centre offers me the best of both worlds: flexibility that fits around my family and a supportive team that values collaboration and growth. The pace is busy, but the work is deeply fulfilling. Each day brings an opportunity to make a difference in a child’s journey, and that is what makes my role so special.
